Information Session – Tuesday, November 17, at 5pm in Forcina 206 and Thursday, November 19, at 4pm in Bliss 228

spain_architecture_03Study in Madrid, one of the world’s most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities. (Here’s proof of its vibrancy:  Check out this great video of Madrid!) Travel through Spanish art, architecture and history in guided tours to historic sites. Visit some of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the world – Toledo, Segovia and Avila – designed as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. Live in the international dormitory, Casa do Brasil, located near the Universidad Complutense campus. Experience the real Spanish life-style by meeting native students eager to converse and socialize with Americans.  2015 program participant Arianne Ramos has created a ten-minute video which provides a student perspective on a summer of study abroad in Madrid – it’s worth a look!

In order to qualify for admission to the program, students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5. All students in the program must register for at least one course and may choose from the following courses:

  • SPA 103 – Beginning Spanish III (NB: SPA 103 completes language requirement)
  • SPA 171 – “Spain: Culture and Traditions” (in English; fulfills the Liberal Learning requirements for Global and Literary, Visual & Performing Arts; must be taken in combination with the SPA 103 or the SPA 216 class)
  • SPA 203 – Intermediate Oral Proficiency (1 unit)
  • SPA 216 – Current Events (1 unit)
  • SPA 370 – Topics: “Exploring Madrid” (1 unit)

Please note:

  • Students taking SPA 171 must also take SPA 103 or SPA 216.  SPA 171 may not be taken separately.
  • Students taking SPA 103/SPA 171 or SPA 216/SPA 171 will pay for two units of tuition.  These students are eligible to apply for federal financial aid in Summer 2016, and we encourage students to apply for the Gilman Scholarship (for students who are eligible for Pell grants during the academic year – please see the CGE staff for more information about the Gilman scholarship, as the application process for the Gilman award is completely separate from the typical financial aid process).
  • Heritage speakers of Spanish may enroll in SPA 216 (without the SPA 210 pre-requisite course) with the permission of the program director.  Please contact Dr. Huguet-Jerez for further details.

The program also includes numerous cultural events at no additional cost to participants.
