At TCNJ we offer several languages deemed “critical” for the future of our national security policy as well as our success as an international commerce power:
These languages are offered in an intensive format, with students taking two units of language coursework each semester in the first year. (The TCNJ History Department has put together a nifty website to explain why students should consider studying these languages – check it out!)
The CLS Scholarship Program promotes summer intensive language study in all of the languages listed above (and a few more that we don’t teach on campus). The programs are immersion experiences, located in countries where the people use the target language on a daily basis, and they are lengthy programs that last the entire summer. For students who are serious about language study, these programs are excellent ways to accelerate your language acquisition and great preparation for graduate school.
The scholarships are very competitive, but there are people on campus here to help students with the application process. There will be a meeting every spring semester to introduce the CLS program to students, and there will be a workshop early each fall semester to prepare students for the November submission deadline.
