What to do When You Return

You finally have arrived home and are over the jet-lag.  You’ve said hi to all your family and friends.  After the excitement wears down you begin to wonder…what can you do with this experience you have just had?  How can it benefit you?

  1. 1. Highlight your internship/volunteer/work experience on your resume

-An internship/volunteer/work position alone can stand out to future employers/graduate schools, but an INTERNATIONAL one stands out even more.  Make sure you highlight extensively on your resume what your duties and accomplishments were.  State specific examples.

-You have gained cross-cultural understanding and have had to solve problems and communicate in a foreign country.  These aspects of your experience show your strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills!

-This proves to the employer/graduate school that you not only have specific, marketable job-skills, but also a unique international understanding.

  1. 2. Highlight any languages you may have learned

-You were LIVING in a foreign country and have improved your foreign language skills.  Make sure to highlight this also!

  1. 3. Keep in touch with the contacts you have made abroad.

-Your supervisor and co-workers from abroad are a great way to network once you are looking for a job.  Whether you want to work abroad or at home, they can be used as references and networking tools.

  1. 4. Make an appointment with TCNJ’s Career Center

-Sit with a counselor and revise your resume to its fullest potential: https://career.tcnj.edu/students/individual-career-counseling/
