This course examines the history of immigration to the United States in various time periods and for various ethnicities/nationality. It considers the causes of immigration, the social, cultural and economic adaptation of various groups, return migration, the significance of race and gender, the varied experience of different immigrant groups, the development of ethnic group identities, changing American policy and attitudes towards immigrants and ethnic groups, and the impact of immigration and ethnicity on American society and culture.
Course Description
This course examines Irish immigration to the US in the 19th and 20th centuries. It will allow students to learn about the push/pull factors in this migration from a unique perspective, as they will be in the country of origin. Irish scholars will lecture students on the push factor as well as Irish migration history and the course instructor will lecture students on the pull factor and the immigration and Americanization process, as well as the role of gender in these experiences.
