The TCNJ Center for Global Engagement and the International Studies Abroad (ISA), have established a semester-long program for TCNJ students in the beautiful city of Valparaiso, Chile. Students will have the opportunity to spend a semester studying at the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez (UAI) in Chile. This program will be complemented with cultural activities, day trips and excursions outside the host city.

Valparaiso

Valparaiso is only about 70 miles north of the capital of Chile, Santiago. It is known to be Chile’s bohemian and free spirited city rooted in the arts. It’s downtown is a UNESCO historical site with a lot beautiful street art, restaurants, architecture and boutiques. The city is surrounded by towering mountains and hills that visitors and locals alike regularly climb to get a better view of the city and the ocean nearby. Visit La Sebastiana, the quirky former residence of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, is now a museum with far-reaching Pacific.

 

About Universidad Adolfo Ibanez

Universidad Adolfo Ibanez (UAI) originated from the Business School of Valparaiso in 1953. Since then it’s facilities have expanded to cover areas of study such as Commercial and Civil Industrial Engineering, Law, Journalism, Psychology, History and Literature and Government. The UAI has an enrollment of more than 7,000 students on its campuses and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. The campus also boasts facilities for playing tennis, soccer, volleyball, rugby, basketball, swimming and weight training. TCNJ students who chose to study at UAI will have the opportunity to participate in three different types of programs. To learn more about the courses available, please follow the links:

 

Service Learning Component

TCNJ students will also have the option to participate in an ISA-Service Learning opportunity with ongoing service-learning projects in the Valparaiso area in order to create a positive and lasting impact in the community. Students will work between 5-10 hours at their host organization in addition to their university courses. ISA offers the following in Service-Learning options in these areas:

  • Arts and Humanities
  • Business and Marketing
  • Communication and Journalism
  • Education
  • Environmental Studies
  • Health
  • Social Work

 

 Cultural Program

The program will include cultural activities and excursions as listed, including entry fees and hotel accommodations for overnight excursions:

  • Historical Tour in Santiago
  • Playas del Norte
  • Pomaire and Isla Negra
  • Pucon
  • Santiago
  • Valle Nevado

ISA Valparaiso staff will welcome students and faculty upon arrival, lead all excursions, facilitate the orientation program and serve as a cultural liaison for the group throughout the program. TCNJ students will also have the option to participate in an ISA-Service Learning opportunity with ongoing service-learning projects in the Valparaiso/Vina del Mar area in order to create a positive and lasting impact in the community. Students will work between 5-10 hours at their host organization in addition to their university courses.
