Course Description:

This faculty-led, short-term, study-abroad course seeks to ground students’ understanding of contemporary Cuba by exploring how Cuban writers, photographers, visual artists, musicians, and others have told their own stories about ‘who they are’ and ‘what it means to be Cuban’. These stories are often told through literature, painting, film, photography, music, monumental design, architecture, etc. and stand against a backdrop of polarized and stereotypical images that have been circulating in the United States for over fifty years. Many other stories have never been heard. Special attention will be given to the intersection of race, gender, immigration, and nationhood in representations of contemporary Cuban society and Cuban identity. Questions we will consider are: How do those outside the island, especially the US, imagine Cuba and why? What are the realities? How does Cuba imagine itself? What are the ways/means in which Cuba represents itself as a nation? Who is included and excluded from those representations and why? What does it mean to be Cuban?

Students will immerse themselves in the city of Havana and its environs; they will visit neighborhoods of cultural and historic import, view renowned examples of architecture, study works of art that are housed in its collections, listen to invited speakers, interview locals (if students speak the language or with the help of a Spanish professor or translator), and attend music and dance performances. Several excursions will also be planned.
