Petition Process for Program Approval

While TCNJ faculty have approved many study abroad programs for our students, we have students every year who propose to participate in other reputable study abroad programs.

Students may petition for program approval using the following procedures:

1) Students must contact a staff member of The Arlotto Family Center for Global Engagement to make an appointment to discuss their intent to study abroad with a non-TCNJ program or affiliated provider/university.

2) Once a student has spoken to a CGE staff member, they should start the TCNJ Study Abroad Application (Students should search & select the Program Name “Petition” to begin the application.) Students are required to complete all application materials paying particular attention to

a) Petition Questionnaire: Completion of this questionnaire is required for A. Family Center for Global Engagement to keep a record of the appropriate details pertaining to the program/ university you are hoping to petition for participation/enrollment.

b) Essay: Please include an extra paragraph explaining why the proposed study abroad program addresses your specific academic or career goals (and not one of the approved study abroad programs from our list)

c) Two Letters of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation must be from your TCNJ advisor or appropriate academic department chair) and must speak to your fitness for study abroad and support the academic objectives of the proposed program.

All of these materials should be submitted to A. Family Center for Global Engagement by the following deadlines:

For Summer, Fall, and academic year study abroad programs – January 25

For Spring study abroad programs – September 5

(If these deadlines have passed, please come to A. Family Center for Global Engagement for help.  We may be able to assist you.)

A. Family Center for Global Engagement reserves the right to present any Petition application to the Global Engagement Program Council and/or appropriate academic department in order to review the provider/program or university and provide recommendations. Generally this would occur during the first week of February (for Summer/Fall/Academic Year programs) and the third week of September (for Spring programs).

For more information, please contact A. Family Center for Global Engagement at goglobal@tcnj.edu.
