The great author Franz Kafka once said, “Prague never lets you go…this dear little mother has sharp claws.”  Prague is a magical city – the “golden city of spires” – with architectural masterpieces, a rich history, an economy emerging from decades of communism, and…yes, we’ll say it – a lively nightlife.  Prague is centrally located in Europe to allow students easy access to all parts of the continent, but we have a feeling that you will not want to leave Prague too often.  (Check out the Time magazine guide to Prague – you won’t be bored!) The TCNJ Prague Study Center offers students opportunities to engage this magnificent world capital, learn about its culture and history, investigate how the European Union has had an impact on an economy in transition, and live with thousands of university students in a young city.

TCNJ Prague has three hosts institutions:

Students at TCNJ Prague have three study options:
  • UPCES: Humanities, Social Sciences – Students may focus their academic work at UPCES.  In order to earn 4.0 units of credit, students will need to take four 3-credit courses plus Elementary Czech (4 credits/1 unit).
  • U ECON + UPCES: Business and Liberal Learning – Students may take up to four courses in the CESP program at the University of Economics. Students then take one liberal learning course at UPCES in order to earn at least 4.0 TCNJ units. (Under re-evaluation, contact study abroad office for more info)
  • IEF + UPCES: Economics and Liberal Learning – Students will take 4.0 units in the International Economics and Finance program at the Institute of Economic Studies, Charles University (as part of the UPCES program). IEF + UPCES students will also take Elementary Czech.

The UPCES program is perfect for students majoring in the Humanities and Social Sciences (including Economics), as there are many academic options.  There is also an opportunity to delve into the history and culture of Prague itself in a course that uses Prague as a laboratory. UPCES offers internship placements for qualified students as well.  The addition of the IEF option at  Charles University only strengthens the UPCES program option for TCNJ students.

The CESP program is designed for business majors, and students may earn credit toward the Management, Marketing, Finance, and Interdisciplinary Business degrees by taking CESP courses.  Students opting for CESP will need to add one UPCES course to their list in order to maintain their schedule of at least 4.0 units per semester for graduation.  (That Prague-focused course – “Prague as a Living History”  – at UPCES, though, sounds like a great selection!)
The UPCES staff will assist students in select accommodations in Prague in apartments, and students may prepare meals at home or eat with other students in the many university-based dining halls in the city.

TCNJ Prague, thanks to our partners at UPCES, offers a wide array of cultural excursions throughout the Czech Republic and Central Europe.
