Spring 2017

TCNJ is proud to present a study abroad program at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares during the Spring semesters. Join us in the heart of Spain — the Autonomous Community of Madrid — at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (UAH). The program is hosted by the Instituto Franklin, an academic meeting place for Spaniards and Americans.

We will help place you in appropriate classes in Alcalá based on your Spanish-language ability. Several English-language courses are offered, but students must take at least two units of Spanish at the 200- and/or 300-levels. However, it is departmental policy that students cannot take more than 3 300-level courses that count towards the Spanish major. Spanish minors may count up to TWO courses towards their minor. Students are welcome to take another class in Spanish, but it will transfer as an elective.

*Exception to the policy above: If the student takes a Spanish course with a professor from TCNJ, majors may then take 4 Spanish courses, and minors 3 Spanish courses.*

The course schedule at the UAH Instituto Franklin offers a wide variety of options. Topics courses are offered in a variety of subjects including the arts, politics, international relations, business, film, medical Spanish, and literature.

This program has required  pre-requisites:

  • Spanish majors and minors: SPA 203 or 210 and SPA 211
  • Others: Mimimum of SPA 103. With this course, students are able to take two Spanish courses while in Alcalá: SPA 203 and SPA 211.

Where is ?

Students will immerse in Spanish culture in Alcalá, a medieval town with modern amenities, half an hour northeast of Madrid. (Trains depart every 15-30 minutes.)

With a population of over 200,000, but a small-town atmosphere, Alcalá offers a rich cultural and social life and ample opportunities to speak Spanish, enabling immersion in the daily life of this historic university city.

Homestays will provide a chance to learn about Spain and its people from a very personal perspective. These families will serve as an anchor for students as they explore the country and its culture. (A note about housing: The housing questionnaire from the Instituto Franklin is quite extensive, which means that no stone is left unturned in the placement of students with appropriate families.  That said, homestays are often tricky…it’s good to have a strategy to make the most out of the homestay experience.  We suggest that students take a look at this article from for hints on how to make a homestay a great time in one’s life.)

Many excursions are built into TCNJ tuition and fees, including a four-day excursion that students will help plan as part of their pre-departure activities. UAH Instituto Franklin organizes multiple excursions to Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, and other towns in the capital region on Fridays. Using Madrid as a transportation hub, TCNJ students will be able to reach any destination in the country as well as Portugal, France, Morocco, and beyond. With no classes on Fridays, there is plenty of time for independent long weekend travel or other activities.

Why a semester in Spain with TCNJ?

In addition to the great location and travel opportunities, there are many benefits to choosing TCNJ Spain:

  • All financial aid and scholarships will follow students to TCNJ Spain (There are no financial aid restrictions.)! Students will earn four units compared to three in other programs.
  • The TCNJ faculty director, Marimar Huguet-Jerez (, will be present throughout the semester as your advocate, and to assist with community-engaged learning course opportunities.

Students will be enrolled as full-time students at TCNJ and will have one class – INTL 350 – in their PAWS accounts as evidence of full-time registration. Specific courses will be placed on the students’ accounts after the completion of the program.

Instituto Franklin

The “Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Estudios Norteamericanos Benjamin Franklin” is a center of the Universidad de Alcalá (Instituto Franklin – UAH) founded in 1987 and focused upon research related to North America. The institute enjoys official recognition as a “University Research Institute” and was the first such research institute at UAH (and the only one in Spain) dedicated solely to North American Studies. As a research institute, Instituto Franklin has been authorized to teach official graduate courses at the master’s and doctoral levels as well as participate in research project calls and scholarship.

Since 1987, the Institute has focused on developing new approaches to institutional collaboration between Spain and North America through specific initiatives based mainly on sponsoring research projects, organizing international meetings and conferences, and developing academic programs for American students.

Cultural Program

Students in the TCNJ Spain program will help plan a four-day excursion to locations of their choice as part of their pre-departure orientation activities, but the Instituto Franklin slate of excursions and field trips will not disappoint anyone.
